50 Years of High-Temperature Ceramics from Cunha

Showcases the history of ceramics in Cunha, from Indigenous peoples to the women pot makers (paneleiras), and the influence of Japanese Noborigama kilns, as well as the dialogue between different generations, rescuing the Art of Fire and the importance of preserving this intangible heritage.

Honorees

Local Pioneers:

Dona Benedita Olímpia de Abreu (in memoriam), a legendary figure in Cunha's ceramic history, embodied the final generation of traditional paneleiras in the region. Her enduring legacy includes techniques and ancestral wisdom rooted in the traditions of local Indigenous communities.

Augusto Campos, Leí Galvão, and Luis Toledo, native sons of Cunha, embody the living connection between the region's rich heritage and the innovative spirit of Japanese Noborigama kilns. Over nearly five decades, they have woven together ancient wisdom and modern craftsmanship, leaving an indelible mark on the evolution of ceramics in the region.

Trailblazers:

Alberto Cidraes, Antônio Cordeiro (in memoriam), Mieko Ukeseki, Shugo Izumi, Toshiyuki Ukeseki, and Vicente Cordeiro (in memoriam). These visionary artists not only introduced groundbreaking Japanese wood-firing techniques using Noborigama kiln but also profoundly enriched and transformed Cunha's ceramic landscape, leaving a lasting legacy in the region.

Suenaga & Jardineiro:

They were pivotal in fostering the growth of artistic ceramics and tourism in Cunha. By creating the "Abertura de Fornada" event, the couple not only transformed the local scene but also played a crucial role in solidifying Cunha's reputation as a leading center for high-temperature artistic ceramics in Brazil, attracting visitors and artists alike.

This project aims to encourage a deeper understanding of the importance of diversity in ceramic art and the vital role that new generations of artists play in shaping its future. At the same time, it honors the invaluable legacy of the master craftsmen, celebrating their contributions to the craft and ensuring their influence continues to inspire future generations.
